Defining Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a safe and non-invasive treatment option using magnetic pulses to stimulate your brain’s electrical activity. During treatment, we precisely target areas in your brain with underactive neurons, a problem causing chemical imbalances leading to mental health disorders. The magnetic pulses improve your brain’s communication networks, boost nerve activity, and rebalance your brain chemicals. These changes in your brain significantly reduce symptoms caused by various mental health problems and chronic pain syndromes.

What to Expect During TMS Treatment

Before Treatment

We ask you to remove credit cards, jewelry, and any other magnetic-sensitive objects from your persons before treatment since TMS therapy uses magnetic pulses. You will also wear earplugs to protect your hearing and stay more comfortable during treatment. TMS therapy produces a loud clicking noise while the equipment runs.

During Treatment

After placing a small, curved magnetic coil around your head, we begin treatment. You will sit comfortably and relax while the magnetic pulses travel to a specific area in your brain. During treatment, you may notice a clicking sound or a light tapping sensation as the magnetic waves stimulate your brain.

After Treatment

After we finish treatment, you can return to your normal activities. TMS therapy does not affect your memory or alertness, so you are free to drive yourself to and from sessions.

Health Conditions TMS Therapy Can Improve

Texas Mind Science’s team uses the CloudTMS™ machine when performing TMS treatments. This cloud-based, repetitive TMS machine lets you access your practice data from the cloud securely. CloudTMS™ machines are FDA-cleared for and effective at treating treatment-resistant depression. Refractory or treatment-resistant depression happens when depression does not improve with antidepressant medication. Additionally, our multidisciplinary team uses TMS to help relieve patients’ symptoms related to other ailments. For instance, TMS may improve multiple aspects of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Some other conditions we treat with TMS include the following:

What to Expect During a CloudTMS™ Session

When you arrive at Texas Mind Science for your first TMS session, you’ll be made comfortable in a relaxing chair. Your provider will carefully identify the best spot on your head for the TMS coil and determine the ideal settings for your treatment. Once everything is mapped out, we enter your personalized information into our CloudTMS™ system, which ensures consistency and accuracy in each session. The coil is gently placed against your head, and you’ll hear some clicking sounds or feel light tapping as the machine sends safe, magnetic pulses to the specific area of your brain involved in mood regulation.

Each session typically lasts 20 to 40 minutes, and most people find it completely comfortable. There’s no pain, no sedation, and no impact on your thinking or memory—so you can drive yourself home afterward and go about your day as usual. For best results, TMS is usually done five times a week for four to six weeks. This consistent approach helps create lasting improvements in mood and mental clarity.

Side Effects of TMS at Texas Mind Science

While TMS is a well-tolerated treatment option, headaches and scalp discomfort are the most common side effects. These side effects get better quickly after you finish your session and typically diminish during your next few treatments. If necessary, you can relieve your headache using over-the-counter pain medication. If you have a persistent headache, Texas Mind Science can temporarily reduce your pulse strength to keep you comfortable.
